week 48: new seasons & new investigators

Hi everyone!

It's officially fall! It's starting to feel like fall here and I love it! It's still so sunny too. Leaves are changing and it's cooler weather. Except the mornings are so cold. This week was good though and saw lots of miracles!

Monday we had FHE at Paula Henrie's and Erin Cordova (less-active) & all her family came! That was awesome! And Dakota & Haley came as well! So did Chelsea & her kids. I showed them the whip cream game and holy cow it just turned into a whip cream fight.

Tuesday we saw Samantha. We had a really good lesson on missionary work. She is feeding us in a couple weeks so that's good. We will meet her husband then! We then saw the Tisdells. They are just so funny I can't handle it. We went on splits and Paula was with me and we had a lesson with Gaylon. I had never seen him look so down and sad. We had a good lesson though and I hope it cheered him up.

Wednesday we pretty much spent all day contacting former investigators. We didn't have much success but we knocked on a guy's door and we were looking for someone else but he answered instead. His name is JC and we asked if he would be interested in learning more and he said yes! We saw Brylee and she is so funny. She always tells us friend drama. Oh to be 9. We talked about faith in God and we told her to read a few pages from it and a few days later we saw her and she said she read it and said that she felt like they were speaking directly to her. She is very cute. We then went to a mother daughter dinner activity in third ward. Haylie's step mom couldn't come so we came as her mom! It was really fun it was a mystery dinner, like they gave us a menu with weird names that describes it but you really have no idea what it is. So you order it and it was interesting to say the least haha.

Thursday we had district meeting and it was a big call to repentance. We talked about how seeing less-actives are a distraction from finding and teaching investigators. Which I never really realized we were doing, we talked about how that is the ward's job to fellowship less-actives. Our purpose is to help people have faith in Christ, repent and be BAPTIZED. so we are really focusing on that. We saw Sally and met her nonmember son Brian. But he didn't stay for the lesson. We saw Nancy and her boyfriend is coming soon for a bit and he isn't a member so we are going to have a lesson with him! Nancy is really excited about it. We had a lesson with Ron, who has taken the discussions several times. He went to church last week and it was his only second time going so we decided to have a lesson with him and see if he is ready. He is so awesome and would be such a good member. He has a hard time feeling the spirit and doesn't feel like he speaks to him. So it's very hard. He is always very logical and so I think he needs more evidence or something. Idk I think Satan is working really hard on him. The spirit was SO strong in the lesson. Ron even spoke differently when the spirit was stronger. It's like how can you not feel this? Idk how the Spirit speaks to him and I wish I could just tell him but missionary work is not that easy. So we aren't going to teach him cause he just isn't quite ready and won't commit to anything. Ron is also an AMAZING painter, he had hundreds of paintings in his house! He doesn't care to sell them but he just likes painting. He is so talented. We saw the Armijos and they are doing good, we had a fun lesson with them.

Friday we saw Cyndie and she is doing well. I love seeing her. For weekly planning we had to go over our less-actives and decide who we need to see less and hand over to the ward council. It was kind of hard. We saw Dakota and he is doing well, although he didn't make it to church so he really isn't progressing. Our appointment later at 8 fell through so we decided to try to see some old potentials in Milligan Valley Ward. And the two we went to go see both told us to come back this weekend! Miracle!

Saturday we saw Haylie in the morning. We talked about prophets and it made me that much more excited about general conference! We then had the preparedness fair which we were asked to help at. It was run by the church and was four hours long. I was surprised how many people were there and especially nonmembers! It was packed! We got lots of free samples, I felt like I was at Costco. After that we had a lesson with Daniela, one of the potentials we met the night before. She is married but her husband works a lot. She has a 6 year old boy named Benjamin. Sister Tysseling came with us. We taught the restoration and the Spirit was so strong! She isn't super religious but knows a lot of members. She is so prepared and said yes to baptism! I love teaching this gospel and sharing it with others. We then watched women's conference and it was so good obviously! I loved President Uchtdorf's talk. It was all on faith and we have been talking a lot about that in our mission. He said some things that really reminded me of our lesson with Ron. He said that just because we can't hear something doesn't mean there isn't anything to hear. He told us to tell people who have a hard time hearing/feeling to listen differently who want to gain faith. He said one sees clearly only with the heart. Ron really can only know with his heart. He also said no matter how much faith we have there are two things it cannot do. It cannot violate another's agency and cannot force our will upon God. Everyone does have their agency and I always have to remember that as a missionary, I just have to try my hardest and never lose faith. President Uchtdorf also said the purpose of faith is not to change God's will but to empower us to act on God's will. Sometimes that is hard to do. He told us to walk by whatever faith we have. I love that. Faith doesn't just grow in a day. He told a really good story about two missionaries never giving up. He said "the reward is not usually behind the first door. So we need to keep knocking. Don't give up. Seek God with all your heart." I know that this is the Lord's work and we have to walk by faith and God will bless us.

Sunday was good. We went to the Gilliams and shared a message with them. Macy was in town. We then had thanksgiving dinner at the Luekers (less-actives). Yes thanksgiving in September. It was the best. The Ericksons were also there and it was so much fun. I love those families so much. We then had a lesson with Camrie & her kids love us so much, they are seriously the cutest. We then had a lesson with new investigators! They are the Gallegos and they have been through A LOT. Trials really do soften hearts. He is now a single dad with three kids. We shared a message with them and they are very interested. Yay a family!!

One of my favorite scriptures is Helaman 3:35 "Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God."

I read a talk this week named walk in the light by President Eyring. It's so good so I want to quote it for you. "Just as you are marked as a target by the enemy of righteousness, you have been protected and watched over by your Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. They know you. They know all of the forces and individuals around you. They know what is ahead of you. And so they know which is ahead of you, and so they know which of the choices you make, which of the desires you decide to satisfy and which of the circumstances around you will make the most difference in keeping you walking in the light. I testify that by the Spirit of Christ and by the Holy Ghost, you may walk confidently in whatever difficulties will come. Because you are so valuable, some of your trials may be severe. You need never be discouraged or afraid. The way through difficulties has always been prepared for you and you will find it if you exercise faith. When you walk in the light, you will feel at that moment some of the warmth and the happiness that will finally be yours when you are welcomed home again with the hundreds and perhaps thousands of others whom will bring with you, who have walked in the light because you did."

I know we can't walk this path by ourselves. I know when we ask for help, we can have angels helping us. We are not alone and we cannot do it alone. I'm grateful for my Heavenly Father and all that He does for me.

Remember to watch general conference this weekend! I know that as we prepare for it and prayerfully ask questions they can be answered. How amazing it is that we can all be gathered to hear the message God wants us to hear! I know that this Church is true!

week 47: i'll sleep when i'm dead

Heyyy again!

This week was way good and way busy. We had 27 lessons this week! And my companion was sick so idk how we did it. The Atonement is real.

Monday we ended pday early and had a lesson with the casillas which were potential investigators. We have been trying to see them for so long! We got a referral from someone who felt really prompted. We brought Daryl with us because he is really good friends with them. It was good, I mean they said no to reading the Book of Mormon but we bore strong testimony and I was bold and left the book with them. He said he might look it over which is a miracle! I honestly think he would look more into the gospel but she is holding him back. Daryl told us to go visit his ex wife who just moved back. She is now remarried and they were both very nice.

Tuesday we saw Jacque Safley in MV Ward. She is a bit crazy, she says she is done talking religion. She comes to church sometimes though. We got in a message because she mentioned Lindsey Stirling so we shared her I'm a Mormon video. I don't think we will go back very often. We had a lesson with Samantha Peterson from MV Ward. She is cute. She has a little family and has been starting to get back to church and wants to get sealed in the temple. We need to work on her husband though. We saw the Tisdells, love them. We then saw Sister Markley. We then had a relief society activity in MV Ward. It was back to school themed and it was so cute! They put so much work into it and I really did feel like I was at school again. I really love MV Ward already. We then saw the Meachams. They are so cute and love missionaries. The parents weren't home but their oldest daughter is 16 so we got to share a message with the kids and that was a lot of fun.

Wednesday we had district meeting and Sister Lawrence and I gave a training on the importance of faith & testimony for the investigator & the missionary. It was her first district meeting and she did so good! We saw Haylie in the morning. She is doing really good. We then saw the Shupes, they are so cute. We then had a lesson with a less-active named Susan in MV Ward. She is so nice and loves the gospel and reads tons of church history books but doesn't come to church! We asked her what keeps her from coming and she says that she has gained a lot of weight...and doesn't have anything to wear & doesn't want to use anything else. Man the excuses people make! But she was serious! So my goal is to get her to come to church! Her son has started to come back! We the saw Tayler and Sister Tysseling came with us. Her kids were so crazy! Like more than normal. So it's hard to stay focused in lessons. We saw Gaylon and we had the Ayres come with us. It was really good. We felt like we should have Brother Ayres come because he still smoked after his baptism. He gave really good advice and I think it helped Gaylon a lot.

Thursday morning we helped with the food boxes. It was really fun. We then saw Nancy Ward. She is so cute. She has so many bears in her house it's crazy. We then saw Sally. She has a special place in my heart. She says she is ready for the temple but knows she can't go in because she doesn't pay tithing. She doesn't have the faith to pay it which is so sad. She just wants to go to the temple so badly. We are working on her. We then saw Kalicia & Willy Hamblin. They are young less-actives in MV Ward. They were funny. We asked them what they want to do to receive more blessings this week and Willy was like, "Honestly we are probably not gonna do anything." What a sassy man. I really like them though and their daughter is really cute. We met a lot of other less-actives in MV Ward which was good. We had dinner at the Gilliams and they made us homemade Chinese food! It was so good! They just spoil us. I told them we never get Asian food and I miss it (I miss Thai food especially). We then went on splits. I went with a yw named Madison. We saw Peggy Mead and her nonmember husband Gary and that was really good. You can tell she just loves having us over. She has opened up a lot more since we have been coming.

Friday we saw Cyndie. She is doing good, she really wants to get back to church. We then saw Chelsea. Her kids are so rowdy but I love them. We saw Dollie. She is so funny. She always says we look tired, we are but we are trying to fake it! We had dinner with the Eagars and they made us steak & smashed potatoes! It was all so good. But I was so full holy cow! We then saw Tyric finally. It had felt like forever, he showed us a lot of us his cool drawings. We then met recent converts in MV Ward, the Bennalley's. They are so cute I love them already! We have to go and wake them up every Sunday morning to get them to church haha. 8am church is rough.

Saturday there was a wood haul for third Ward. The wood goes to widows in the Ward. We went and helped put wood into trucks. It was pretty fun. We then helped the Ericksons do their yard. Holy cow it is night & day. We didn't actually see anyone on Saturday. Everyone canceled!! And we had really solid appointments with investigators! I guess that's just what happens. And it was a super nice day out, actually this whole week has been but it probably will be getting cold soon. It didn't really seem like a productive day but it really was because we did meet a lot of people. Third Ward had a ward party, a chili cook off and that was really fun. Lots of nonmembers and less-actives came! Everyone loves free food and it was at a park & it was just good.

Sunday was busy cause #church. I went to third Ward. It was the primary program and who knew the primary program brings so many less-actives and nonmembers?! Miracles. I taught Sunday school to 20 14-18yr olds so that was crazy. Teaching teenagers is interesting to say the least. We taught a new investigator! Her name is Sydnee and she has taken the lessons before. She is 14 and her mom passed away who was lds. She seems interested but also she is a teenager so she was on her phone like the whole time. So that was a struggle. So we are hoping it all goes well! We then saw Teri & Kenny. They are adorable. We then had a lesson with Dakota. His girlfriend is a less-active so that was good. He is like a typical boy but wants to get baptized, we set a date for oct 15! We just need to make sure he is really ready. I love the Ericksons.

In Alma 36 it's Alma talking about his conversion story and his change of heart that he had. He really did turn his life completely around facing God. Verse 24 says, "Yea, and from that time even until now, I have labored without ceasing, that I might bring souls unto repentance; that I might bring them to taste of the exceeding joy of which I did taste; that they might also be born of God, and be filled with the Holy Ghost." Alma had an experience with the Atonement and he wanted to share that joy with others. That is what motivates us to do missionary work. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is what keeps me going. I love sharing the gospel with others. This work is hard but it makes me so happy.

week 46: dem apples

Hello my favorite peeps! Happy first day of school Paulie pockets! And everyone else at byui. School is cool. But anyways my week was good, a little crazy but good!

Monday we had stake FHE. It was good. There was a lot of drama about which ward we were going to take. They finally called us late Tuesday night and we are getting Milligan Valley Ward! So we will be white washing the sisters area. It's been going pretty well so far. It's just hard cause we literally know no one!

Tuesday we got a text from Angie Nelson that Jerry Nelson died :( He is one of our less-actives that started returning since we came to visit him. I guess he had a heart attack while he was chopping wood and his daughter Ginger found him passed out on the bathroom floor. I was just super in shock honestly, he is pretty young but did have a lot of health problems. I'm just glad he was able to turn his life around this summer. It had been really cool to see. He loves the gospel and started home teaching just last month. We would sit next to him every Sunday at church. I'm going to miss him. We just went to his funeral today. We found a less-active. His wife is a jehovah witness. Their last name is the Stovers. We shared a video and she didn't look at it but she was very nice! We saw the Tisdells and while we were driving over, their grandma almost hit my car! Haha she really shouldn't be driving. We had a lesson with Brylee. She is so cute, it's just sad how much she has to deal with when she is only 9. We then saw Tyric and had a good lesson with him. He still didn't come to church though :(

Wednesday we saw Haylie in the morning. She is super cute. We then saw Nancy who is a less-active in MV Ward. She got baptized a couple years ago. She is a little crazy but really funny. Thursday we had a lesson with Jessica who was a referral. I think I might have talked about her in my last email but anyways we contacted her and gave her our number if she was ever interested. She texts us back ten mins later and asks if we can do a "bible study". We say yes but we really didn't want to bible bash. She is very Christian but doesn't believe we are Christian. Obviously. Anyways we go with a recent returned missionary. We get there and immediately she shows us a printed copy of Wikipedia of Joseph smith...I'm like oh dear. I ask her if we can share with her about what we believe and how the church came to be. We teach her the restoration and she asked a lot of questions and getting into really deep doctrine. I asked her if she wanted to know if the Book of Mormon was true or not and she said oh I already know it's not. I'm like you haven't even read it!! But Jessica is the nicest person ever!!! She gave us a ton of apples of her tree. She would be such a good Mormon but we will see. We then saw Gaylon. He is still struggling a lot with smoking, dang it. He is having a lot of marriage problems and that's not helping. We met with Tayler. She is in MV Ward. I actually met her on exchanges. Lessons are hard with her cause her kids are crazy!! We made apple crisp with Cody Garcia and Ron her neighbor came! Turns out he is a member! He tells us he was only Mormon for 3 days haha. His life story is crazy. Ah I so bad want to reactive him! Or activate him cause I don't think he was ever active haha. He is so cool. He has this awesome hippy trailer. I'll take a pic of it one day.

Friday wasn't really that exciting. We did a lot of weekly planning. There is a lot of that with three wards. And none of the goals/plans for MV Ward were even showing up so we had to seek lots of revelation without even meeting the people! We had dinner with the Nelson family. We talked about temples. It was really good. They haven't been sealed but they want that as their goal. I wanna go to their sealing so bad! We then made more apple stuff with Cody that night. Daryl came and we really want them to date. Call me sister match maker.

Saturday we went to Cody's again and made more apple pie! She brought her nonmember friend, Kimberely. It was way fun. We then had a lesson with Dakota at Lisann's. He wants to get baptized! We just want to make sure he is ready. He doesn't know much about religion at all. We shared the plan of salvation and he said it made a lot of sense to him. For dinner we went to Goob's Pizza for Annalyse's birthday, I love that family. We saw Daryl and his mom. I love them so much. I taught them the whip cream game. They loved it.

Sunday was good. It was kind of crazy since we have three wards. And we had two ward councils that day. We saw Dave Jr. We talked about missionary work, he is like I'm already good at that so I don't need to work on that. Oh Dave. We then saw the Eagars!! They are doing good. They are feeding us dinner this week! We then had a meeting with President Hamblin. It was way good. It's nice to have a stake president who cares so much!

I read the book of Moses this week and that was really good. I love reading about Adam & Eve. I think it's such a simple story but has so much meaning to it. A lot of religions look at it as a bad thing, which it wasn't. But I also think that because of the fall we realize how much we need our Savior. Because of the fall we can have joy! And who doesn't want to be happy?

And remember! "All things denote there is a God" - Alma 30:44

I know that our Savior lives and loves us. God is cheering for us and I KNOW that He is in the details of our lives. We need His Heavenly guidance everyday. Love you all!

week 45: I'm staying in the mountains of Eagar to dwell

Monday, September 5th, 2016

IM STAYING IN EAGAR! hallelujah. Cause I love it here and I'm so in my element. The mountains are just the best. Anything to get out of that valley heat. I don't know how I got so lucky to not have a valley summer. #blessed. But anyways I am still with my baby Sister Chausow! And we are white washing another ward, Amity Ward. Well most likely. We might get Springerville. Long story but basically Amity is far away and we then would have three buildings so President is getting back to us. I'm happy with whatever! I'm excited to get another ward though! Definitely going to be more work but change is good.

Monday was one of my favorite pdays of all time. I'm sure you saw the fishing pictures. I caught my first fish! And I killed it with a rock and gutted it/ cleaned it out. And no I'm not going to eat it cause that's just gross. Then we watched Prince of Egypt on the big screen! And then guess who surprised me?! Sister Fairholm and Sister Smith!!! Best 30 mins of my life! They came from the valley to a doctors appointment, love them so much it hurts. We then had a lesson with Tyric. I love him and his family so much, they are the cutest and such good recent converts. We then went to Bishop Gleaves and talked with him. Him and his wife are the best.

Tuesday was okay. It seemed like no one was home or answering their doors. But that's just missionary life. We did some service here and there. We had a lesson with Sarah Meacham and her family which was good cause her husband who isn't a member was there! And we had been trying to see them forever! So miracle after a hard day!

Wednesday morning we saw Haylie. She is pretty much awesome. We then went to a couple seminary classes and did a little thing and handed out referral cards and we got so many back! And man their seminary class is SO nice. I'm a little jealous, cause early morning was rough. We then had a lesson with Gaylon. He is doing okay. We had a good lesson on the plan of salvation though and talked about family history work cause the family history consultants were there. It was really powerful cause his mother has passed away. We then had a lesson with Daryl. They are pretty much my family and I never want to leave them.

Thursday we had ZTM and is was way good! So all the trainings were from Elder Kevin W. Pearson who came to MLC last week, yeah I didn't get to go :( oh well. There is so much I could write about so I'll just share a bit about what we talked about. We talked a lot about faith and getting passed the frontier of faith by having obedience. When we are obedience then we will have assurance. We talked a lot about alignment and when we are aligned with God we get more light and truth. We talked about asking yourself each night "what percent of the day am I seeking the Spirit?" I really like that and everything we talked about made me want to work even harder. We talked about how everyone accepted Christ. There is not a single person on earth who didn't have the expectation go follow Jesus Christ and be baptized. Our eternal spirits know the truth. We all have mortal amnesia and are here to help people remember their divine nature. We have really high goals as a mission and we talked a lot how faith produces miracles. I know that God is a God of miracles. I know that we need the powers of heaven to do this work. We can't do it alone. Ah I could go on but I won't, it was just so good. We had lunch and Elder Johnson and I ate a chili. Regrets. I had ice cream and 3 otterpops afterwards cause my mouth was on . We then saw the Tisdells and Colin hasn't been smoking for 9 days! I'm so proud of him! We then saw the Armijos and we talked about temples with them. It was really good. They said that they are going to the temple on Saturday so idk if they went or not.

Friday we saw Chelsea. She is doing good, it was crazy over there as normal. Haha I love them. We then we're gonna try to see potentials, the Casillas, but they didn't answer. I love it when people tell you to come at a time and they don't answer   we then helped Sister Markley put sealant on her counter tops. And then we helped the Henries bag chilies so she can freeze them, so many chilis. My hands were burning for a good two hours after that. It was so fun though. I love the Henries. Paula is literally my mom. And her son is a missionary in Seattle so who knows maybe he will go to Sammamish! We then went to see Sally. She is still having a hard time understanding tithing. She didn't get it why we have to pay our tithing to go inside the temple. She was like let's have a meeting with God and change this, haha I'm like that's not how it works. We then saw Dollie. She is doing well. She is just so funny. We then saw the Eagars. I love them! They know the church is true and what they are supposed to be doing but don't do it. Dah we are working on them. Their baby got blessed on Sunday! So that was super awesome.

Saturday was good. Sister Chausow didn't feel very good so we didn't see a lot of people. We saw Jerry and his daughter is here now! She just got out of rehab. We are excited to start teaching her. She is a member and has been through the temple and everything. We then helped Cody Garcia make peach jam! That was way fun. We tried to see lots of people and we did contact a few. We then saw Erin Cordova. I love her. She is having a hard time cause of her divorce. It's so hard when you see people you love not happy. It's like come to church!

Sunday was good. Fast Sundays are kinda killer on the mission though. Let's see we saw Dave and Haylie. They are doing good. We ate dinner at the Henries. I love them a lot. We met a girl named Jessica. A member told us to go visit her. She is super cool. Really Christian and into her church but she said we can come over on Thursday! Pray it goes well! We have been fasting every Sunday this month to find more people to teach and baptize! We then saw Teri & Kenny. We had a whole lesson on the 15 step program. Kenny is gonna start it and Teri just won't commit. She says she will pray about it though. Ugh I hate addictions!

I'm in Alma right now in the Book of Mormon & it's all so good but in chapter 13:33 says "And this is the manner after which they were ordained--being called and prepared from the foundation of the world according to the foreknowledge of God, on account of their exceeding faith and good works; in the first place being left to choose good or evil; therefore they having chosen good, and exercising exceedingly great faith, are called with a holy calling, yea, with that holy calling which was prepared with, and according to, a preparatory redemption for such." So this is talking about the priesthood but since I'm a missionary I thought about it about being foreordained as a missionary. I think that is so cool. And they talked about this scripture at ZTM. We were faithful and righteous in the pre-earth life to be missionaries here. I'm so grateful God called me to be His servant. And then I finished doctrine & covenants! Ah it's so good! I love it cause a lot of it is about missionary work. In d&c 138:56 it's says, "Even before they were born, they, with many others, received their first lessons in the world of spirits and were prepared to come forth in the due time of the Lord to labor in his vineyard for the salvation of the souls of men." God trusts us to do His work. We were called at this time to bring others unto Him. It's the greatest work on earth!

Also in d&c 138: 25-26 it says, "25 I marveled, for I understood that the Savior spent about three years in his ministry among the Jews and those of the house of Israel, endeavoring to teach them the everlasting gospel and call them unto repentance; 26 And yet, notwithstanding his mighty works, and miracles, and proclamation of the truth, in great power and authority, there were but few who hearkened to his voice, and rejoiced in his presence, and received salvation at his hands." This amazes me. Jesus was the perfect missionary & still few listened & followed him. We as missionaries only suffer a little little bit compared to Christ.

I read the talk "None Were with Him" by Elder Holland and he says, "Now I speak very carefully, even reverently, of what may have been the most difficult moment in all of this solitary journey to Atonement. I speak of those final moments for which Jesus must have been prepared intellectually and physically but which He may not have fully anticipated emotionally and spiritually--that concluding descent into the paralyzing despair of divine withdrawal when He cries in ultimate loneliness, 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?' Indeed, it is my personal belief that in all of Christ’s mortal ministry the Father may never have been closer to His Son than in these agonizing final moments of suffering. Nevertheless, that the supreme sacrifice of His Son might be as complete as it was voluntary and solitary, the Father briefly withdrew from Jesus the comfort of His Spirit, the support of His personal presence. It was required, indeed it was central to the significance of the Atonement, that this perfect Son who had never spoken ill nor done wrong nor touched an unclean thing had to know how the rest of humankind--us, all of us--would feel when we did commit such sins. For His Atonement to be infinite and eternal, He had to feel what it was like to die not only physically but spiritually, to sense what it was like to have the divine Spirit withdraw, leaving one feeling totally, abjectly, hopelessly alone. But Jesus held on. He pressed on." God did not want to leave Christ but He has to for the Atonement to be complete. He was alone. Christ knows what it feels like to be lonely, afraid, and rejected. But still he pressed on. Every day I need to be aligning myself with Christ who is aligned with the Father.
